101+ Activities for ACES
Autism Continuum Education Students

101+ simplistic activities, games, and ideas inspire learning and ignite the senses of each individual across the autism spectrum. Children and adults will love the active, easy learning and playing methods intertwined with responsibility and social awareness. The ideas found in this book are meant to guide caregivers through the journey of developing and increasing the abilities of individuals with disabilities to interact with the world. Individuals with autism need steady guidance and foundational building activities to navigate through learning. The activities in this book are meant to accentuate autism and and can be customized to the functioning level all who are participating ranging from individuals with profound needs to typically functioning peers. Eliminate the restrictive saying, “But he has autism!” and replace it with “Since he has autism he can do this activity a different way; different but okay!” The methods are designed to shift children into an educationally social environment and away from television, electronics, and undesirable behaviors. These activities are great for school, therapy, and home and were especially complied for kids with ALL levels of autism including Asperger’s, individuals who are nonverbal, individuals with severe cognitive impairments, and other special people such as those with Sensory Processing Disorder, social anxiety, Attention-Deficient Disorder (ADD), Attention-Deficient/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and Cerebral Palsy.

About the author

Caroline Koehler obtained a double masters of science in special education and general education from Indiana State University. She has instructed children with special needs in the school setting, childcare setting, and home environment and has experience with individuals with disabilities from birth through adolescence. Caroline became intrigued with children and autism while teaching kindergarten. Later she worked as a developmental therapist instructing families and caregivers on useful techniques to advance infants and toddlers with developmental delays. Caroline also facilitated a special education classroom exclusively for students with autism aged kindergarten through sixth grade who were significantly delayed cognitively, behaviorally, or socially. She has served as both a special education inclusion teacher and an autism consultant for children within the public schools and is eager to offer advice, suggestions, and support. Caroline is passionate about the use of visuals including schedules, monitoring controls, cue cards, and social stories. Often asked what it takes to work with children and adolescents with intense needs, she always answers the same: Treat the individuals and families with respect and dignity; the rest will come.
