One thing that I used to struggle with at the beginning of kindergarten was when the children needed to learn the basic of books, before they could really begin reading. Children need to practice 1:1 correspondence, practice using eagle eye, and learn that beginner books have repetition before they can truly embrace books. That being said I created a set of 15 books that have simple, yet colorful pages, have "reading buttons" under each word and have repeating words to increase student confidence. These books help children turn into readers and I used them quite a bit in my classroom during daily 5, guided reading, and in whole group instruction. Note I also included the 32 kindergarten sight words that we practice throughout the year.
