This handout supports a student's essay writing process by helping him or her reflect on the thesis, purpose, and audience of a rough draft. It will take most of a standard class period, but leaves time for an introduction and for a teacher to emphasize areas of drafting of particular concern to him or her.
The handout also asks students to identify their supporting ideas and the source of their evidence for those ideas. This sort of reflection ensures that a student starts an essay with a strong thesis and convincing supporting ideas.
This reflection is based in Common Core writing standards and complements the "11th and 12th Grade Peer Draft Response." It can be used for analytical, expository, or persuasive writing.
