Thank you for your interest in reading 12 Keys for Engaging At-Risk Students. I wrote this book from the perspective that through a teacher’s passion and love for teaching, each and every student can and will be successful, and most importantly, that we have so much to learn from our students. In 12 Keys for Engaging At-Risk Students, I have profiled the real-life stories of the day-to-day struggles of at-risk students, in what I hope, is a compassionate and thought provoking manner.
This book also profiles several of my teaching colleagues who truly believed in a philosophy of embracing the beauty of an ethnically diverse school. The teachers and administrators shared a love of their work, a love for the students, and made each day a unique and positive experience for every student. By creating a classroom environment in which every student felt a true sense of belonging, the richness and beauty of an ethnically diverse classroom became a rewarding learning experience for everyone, especially for me. While the students lived in poverty, they were not poor, for they had so much to give. For this, I am forever grateful.
Through this book, it is my intention to affirm and inspire, and to encourage you, as you fulfill your calling as a teacher to make a difference in the lives of each and every student.
