I created this product because I was in search of articles that I could read with my students for the creation of the Thirteen Colonies, but I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for. These articles are based on the fourth grade curriculum that we teach in Georgia, but could be used for other grade levels and states. I also kept the ELA Common Core in mind when I was writing the comprehension questions.

I plan to use these as articles that we will paste into our Social Studies interactive notebooks. I have included at least one interactive activity or flip book for each article. I have also included comprehension questions for each article that can help with class discussion, but can also be used for a grade.

I will read the articles with my class, we will have discussion and I also use trade books (check out our blog Collaboration Cuties for more information on ideas for that.). Then, we will do the interactive activities or flip books together in our notebooks. After that, I will have the students answer the questions for a grade. Many of the questions are set up like constructed response questions.

These passages are at a higher reading level since the vocabulary that is included in our Social Studies curriculum is more challenging. This is why I will read it aloud with my 4th graders. These articles will be great for differentiation if you teach 5th or 6th grade. These articles are great for close reading!

Articles are on:
The Lost Colony of Roanoke
Jamestown
Plymouth
New England Colonies
The Middle Colonies
The Southern Colonies
Native Americans (and the affect of the colonies on them)
Colonial Trades and Occupations
Georgia (since I teach in GA we have to know about this so I included it in case you need it too)

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me at cutesyclickables@gmail.com

I hope that you are able to use these articles to help with your Colonial America unit of study!
Amanda
