• 40 Fun Photograph Prompts
• 15-Minute Exercises to Improve Writing Fluency
Students become better writers the more they write. Quick Writes • Set #2 is a great collection of motivating photographs to use for timed, fifteen-minute fluency exercises. There are 40 full-color photographs (two to a page) that also reproduce well in grayscale. All the photographs are in the public domain, so you can reproduce them with confidence. There is something to pique the interest of every student including photos of animals, sports, adventure, sci-fi, nature, humor, and lots more! Even your most reluctant writers will find a photograph they can relate to. By investing just fifteen minutes a day and having students write on a daily basis, students should see their writing skills improve.
These fluency exercises are the perfect way to start your morning and get students in the practice of writing and sharpening their skills. Start with a fifteen-minute writing session and gradually increase the amount of time allotted as students become more comfortable and fluent in writing.
Rubrics are included, but it is suggested that you wait to use them for assessment until students can write for about half an hour. When you first begin, the emphasis should be on fluency and getting students’ ideas on paper.
Post a selection of photos on a bulletin board so students can pick their favorite, or pick one photo to project as the theme for everyone to write about as a class. When time is up, take a few minutes to share a few story beginnings. Students can complete their stories later if they wish.
In addition to the 40 Photo Prompts, this unit also includes:
• Other Ways to Use Quick Writes Photo Prompts
• Guidelines for Good Writing
• Questions to Think About – a Note to Students
• a Student’s Checklist for Writing
• a Teacher’s Grading Rubric for Writing
• a Quick Writes Checklist to keep track of the prompts completed
• an Award Certificate
