Writing fluency is often an unknown component of the writing workshop. At the beginning of the year an initial assessment should be made. Then, several times a week, a quick write is administered and recorded. The goal is to see how many words can be written, while staying on topic, in a 3 minute interval. This information comes from my latest published book RTI Meets Writer's Workshop. The students LOVE self-assessing their number of words written, graphing them, and watching themselves improve. I simply put one of the quick write slides up for all to see, set my timer for 3 minutes and away they write!!
