It seems that ESL learners tend to make the same types of grammar mistakes in speaking and writing, since they are consistently translating directly from their own language. This ebook identifies 150 of these common mistakes and offers suggestions on how to fix them. Each mistake comes with explanations as well as other helpful hints and similar example sentences.
If you are an ESL instructor, you will find "150 Common Written & Spoken Errors Made by ESL Learners" very useful as a warm-up or bell ringer for your lesson.
What I do is print off 1-2 common mistakes with the explanations for each class. First, I write the common mistake example on the board and elicit answers as to why the sentence(s) contains mistakes and what the possible corrections are. Then I give the handouts to the students and go over the explanations with the class. For an ESL class, you can easily use other grammar exercises as a follow-up lesson. For instance, I used the common error "The accident WAS happened," went over why it was incorrect, and then did a unit on passives as well as intransitive verbs. You can easily adapt the material for your own class.
Assuming you did 1-2 of these four days a week, these materials could last you 25 weeks.
