Powerpoints and Textbooks have their limits. I teach mid/upper-level ELL students and gen-ed students with low lexiles and lower attention spans. My test scores on the VA SOL (yes, that’s what our test is called here) were low until I started focusing on Comprehensible Input and Drill-and-Kill. They need to be engaged and understand the text! So simple. I just had to rewrite history!
I’m selling my BFUs (Benchmark-Focused Units) so that you can see what a difference they make. he BFU is written at a lower lexile level but targets high school standards. (The VA standards "surpass" Common Core, although they’re pretty much the same thing). Students complete the BFUs on their own computers. Yes! You will need computers in the class; You don’t want to print out 50 pages! You can facilitate instead of standing up lecturing or translating the byzantine textbooks.
The comprehension questions are structured so the student HAS TO READ and not just cut-and-paste keywords.
