I always struggle with the ongoing debate of making "independent reading" feel like "work" instead of "pleasure." One of the ways I've tried to provide freedom while still ensuring accountability is with this handout. I use these prompts to give students choice on how they reflect on their book. There are eight categories of topics, and within each, there is at least one "write" and one "draw" option. This allows students to choose both the topic and method for reflection; it also provides good ideas for students who struggle to do more than merely summarize... and, it makes for easy sub plans when I need them!
