Students need something routine to do each and every day at the beginning of each class period in order to be productive and mentally present. I like to tell my students that it is not enough to be physically in the room to be present; they must also be mentally present. A daily bell ringer / do now is the perfect way to help students get checked in mentally after they arrive physically.

1. Power Point with 180 slides (181 including title slide), each with a unique daily bell ringer / do now.
2. A response page for students to write their responses to the slides.
Monday: Word of the Week - Students will write down a grade appropriate word, part of speech, and definition. They will then write an original sentence and draw a small illustration to exemplify their understanding of the word.
Tuesday: Quote of the Week - Students will copy a quote and its speaker. They will then provide an analysis of the quote (what does it mean?) and a response (what do they think of the quote?).
Wednesday: Debate of the Week - Students will read a popular debate question and quickly jot down their thoughts. You could then facilitate a mini debate to get the students talking.
Thursday: Opinion of the Week - Students are asked a question that forces them to reflect on themselves. They will consider their thoughts and share their personal interests and beliefs.
Friday: Goal for Next Week - Each week, students will be tasked with creating a new goal for the following week. This goal can be personal or academic. They will write down their goal, explain why that is their goal, and they will create a 3 step program that will help them reach their goal.
