Description
There are scores of ways to organize an AP™ English Language & Composition class. This FULLY EDITABLE 180-day pacing guide is a straightforward chunking of the following skill sets:
◈rhetorical analysis
◈analyzing and writing in the rhetorical modes
◈argumentation and persuasion
◈the research process
◈the synthesis essay
This pacing guide is provided as both PowerPoint and Google Slides.
STOP!! You can get a free PDF of the pacing guide here.
Woven into the pacing guide is a survey of American literature, instruction in strategies for the multiple choice section of the AP™ Lang exam, process essays, and a researched persuasive speech. Where applicable, I have hyperlinked a resource I created to help in planning. If you have purchased my large AP English Language & Composition Product BUNDLE, you already have most of those resources. Not every lesson I teach is in that bundle, and there are lessons in the bundle that did not make it into this pacing guide. Check the My Purchases section of your Teachers Pay Teachers dashboard to be sure you have the most current version of that bundle. I update it regularly with new resources and revised units of study.
This pacing guide is an IDEAL and does not account for class size, student motivation, school cancellations, class interruptions, field trips, or assemblies. Most importantly, it does not account for the specific needs of students. If a school recruits the cream of the crop for AP Lang and schedules them 90 minutes a day for 180 days, this pacing guide might be a perfect fit. If a school has an inclusive AP™ program, no textbooks for the course, sparse computer access, or a “no-homework” culture, this guide must be modified. To that purpose, I have shaded the negotiable elements in light purple. If units must be cut or pared down, start there. If the sequence of these lessons doesn’t seem quite right to you, change it. If your students are overwhelmed and begging for a reading day, give them one. If you need to back up and re-teach a concept, do so.
This pacing guide does not explicitly address grammar, sentence formation, usage, or mechanics. Student need will dictate the nature of that instruction. One resource a teacher might find helpful is this Grammar & Usage Growing BUNDLE.
