The year is 1860. The country is deeply divided. The next president will either lead the country toward a peaceful resolution or a bitter civil war. Who will you choose?
In this activity students examine background information about the four candidates running for president in 1860. After taking notes about each candidate, students vote in a mock election. Then they analyze the actual election results.

1. Student handout for taking notes about each of the candidates. The handout also includes a chart and map of the popular and electoral votes from 1860.
2. Power point showing pictures of the candidates and providing background information on each.
3. Student ballot sheet to be copied and distributed to each student for voting in the mock election. I ask for student volunteers to collect, tally and announce the results.
