This lesson is a bundle of two of my favorite lesson plans creating a complete unit! Included are my Jazz Age Culture Centers & Speakeasy simulation, which are both available separately through my store. However, if you would like to purchase both, you can do it here for a discounted price and get a great unit on the 1920s.
The first part of this unit is the Jazz Age Culture Centers. This lesson plan is an interactive and hands-on experience in order to teach your students the culture of the 1920s in America. This covers movies, music, advertisement, literature, politics, and radio, each important elements of life in this time. In a fun and hands-on way, students can explore what it was like to live in America during the Jazz Age and learn to apply values and ideals of the period.
Included in this lesson:
--A lesson plan with descriptions and directions.
--A full unit PowerPoint covering the trends of the time period
--A graphic organizer that follows along with the PowerPoint
--A 15 page document of the stations for the learning centers including stations for music, movies, radio, advertisement, and literature. Complete with youtube links (for movies and music), readings, questions, and visuals.
--A student packet to accompany each station.
--A sound clip and transcript for a 1920s radio show
--A password protected website that includes a digital versions of all of the stations.
--A creative culminating activity in which students will create a product based on the culture of the time period.
Access to technology is recommended for this activity, although it may be possible to adapt without it.
This activity is extensive and easily adaptable for all levels of students!
The second part, the Speakeasy Simulation, can be used as a wrap up after you finish the Culture Centers and of all the things I do in my classroom, this may be my favorite!
This lesson is a fun and great way to wrap up a unit on the 1920s Jazz Age in America, and give you students the experience of being in a speakeasy. Your kids will have a BLAST and will always remember it. It will be a fabulous visual for them, as well as leaving an impression of the important people who played a role in 1920s culture.
This lesson will require some prep on your part, so make sure you give yourself plenty of time to get everything set up and ready to go.
Included in this lesson are the steps you will take in order to put everything together, as well as the worksheet for the students to use and an answer key for you.
