The first read includes annotating the text for main idea/supporting details and vocabulary and main idea graphic organizers (RI.5.2). The second read includes vocabulary in context practice (RI.5.4). The third read includes summarize (RI.5.1) and analyze (RI.5.1, W.5.2) the text.

The objectives of this activity are for students to be able to analyze the effects of Jim Crow laws and practices, quote accurately from a text when explaining what a text says explicitly, determine the main idea, summarize the text, determine the meaning of general academic words and phrases in a text relevant to a grade 5 topic area, and write informative text to examine a topic and convey ideas and information clearly.
