1960s Civil Rights Songs: You, the Curator Webquest

Google Drive™ folder

Description
During the Civil Rights movement of the 1960s, music and songs played a large part in keeping up morale and bringing messages of peace. In You, the Curator: Civil Rights Songs Webquest, made in Google Slides for the Google Classroom, your middle school, and high school students approach research of this era through the eyes of a museum curator selecting artifacts to display. This is an excellent activity to use to observe Martin Luther King, Jr. Day or African-American History Month (also known as Black History Month). The slides include a thorough list of school-appropriate links which you can edit through your Google Classroom. On various sides, students will focus their research on the backgrounds of songs, Pete Seeger, and the Freedom Riders. There are slides that are open-ended so students can include information they discovered that was not included in the questions, to allow them some autonomy in the project. In the end, students put up pictures in their "gallery" to create their displays. There is even a section for students to create their own lyrics about civil rights, with an option to record and attach to the slides.
The teachers' guide includes screenshots, directions for uploading in Google Classroom, a list of what is included, and an answer key. This answer key makes it a great tool for short-term or long-term subs and for flexible distance learning when you have some students in virtual school and some who are live.
