For a more cross-curricular approach when teaching S.E. Hinton's The Outsiders, I incorporate some 1960s history each year, especially events in America during that time.
So that students can explore a wide range of topics (political, cultural, scientific, etc.), we have a classroom "museum exhibit" at the end of the unit where partners can show off a poster project on a specific topic from the 60s.
Once all students submit and display their projects, each class does a "walkthrough" of the exhibits, giving projects a rating and taking a "quiz" using the information found on students' posters.
This resource includes everything you will need to get your classes started on this creative, open-ended project:
-topic sign-up sheets
-peer rating sheet
