Product Description
Students are fascinated with their phones!
Turn that fascination with social media into fascination about Orwell's characterization in 1984.

CHARACTER’S SMART PHONE

If only the 1984 characters could communicate with each other...

-----What songs would Winston have on his playlist?

-----Would Julia create her own bitmoji or have a dating profile?

-----What might we find in Parsons' online shopping cart?

Enhance students' awareness of character development!

This is a creative assignment I designed to evaluate students' understanding of characters in 1984; however, it can be used with any character from literature or history...even current "characters" in the news.

The directions for the activity are as follows:

--Imagine that your character exists in our society.

--Imagine a phone homepage that displays his or her apps.

--Choose apps from the following options, and then complete the

illustration/discussion component for each. (Brief description= 150-225 words).

---You may be comical, but be sure to accurately represent your character’s traits.

---You will be evaluated on creativity and evidence of your understanding of the plot
and character.

I provide a blank cell phone where students draw or paste a background.

They must then choose options under categories that include:

---Entertainment (Netflix, Spotify, and YouTube)

---Social connections (Facebook, Instagram, and match.com)

---Shopping on Amazon

---Legitimate news

---Self-indulgence (selfies, bitmoji, ringtones, games).

Students discuss why their character would have accessed or posted various items.

The kids really love this project, and I get awesome results.

Thank you for your consideration of this resource.
