"1984" by George Orwell is a classic dystopian novel recounting one man's rebellion against an oppressive and restrictive regime. Rich with parallels to historical and modern societies, this story highlights themes surrounding propaganda, surveillance, misinformation, and mass control.
Students may be interested to learn that Orwell's original draft of this novel has been entirely rewritten; the only remaining part of such draft is Emmanuel Goldstein's "Theory and Practice of Oligarchical Collectivism," which is delivered in Book II, Chapter 9. Dense with theory, this section of the text can be a challenge for students; however, it serves as the foundation of the novel and is therefore important to read closely. With the help of this resource, students will be drawn to pay close attention to the key areas of this manuscript.
This resource is divided into two parts. Part A has students think deeply about different aspects of Goldstein's theory and communicate their understanding in their own words. Part B has students apply their close reading to a variety of conceptual and inquiry-based activities.
As always, a full answer key is included with this resource!
