These creative unit activities for Orwell's 1984 will get your students to sit up and pay attention.

This novel is just as relevant, engaging, and mind-stirring today as it was when Orwell wrote it.

But I think we can all agree it sometimes drags a bit in the second half. It's hard to keep students focused and engaged allllllll the way through.

That's where this unit activity pack comes in. You may suddenly find you don't have time for everything you want to do!

  • Get students examining the text from a film-maker's perspective with the storyboarding project.
  • Help them consider the meaning of propaganda when they create their own propaganda posters from two perspectives.
  • Surprise them with two 1984 spoof commercials from their favorite brands, then let them discuss how the companies use imagery from 1984 to manipulate them.
  • Mix things up in discussion and help them try on new roles with the 1984 discussion role cards.
  • Get them connecting 1984 to modern politics and branding with the 1984 collage project. (Plus, get ready for a colorful and imposing classroom display!).

I became fascinated with 1984 after teaching it to my Bulgarian students who were actually living in a post-Communist society. These activities have worked well for me and my students, and I think you're going to love them.

From the Reviews:

"Awesome! I used the propaganda poster assignment and hung them around the room - my eleventh graders really enjoyed it! Will be doing more this week :)."

"Wow! Great information included."

"This is fantastic! Thank you!"

"I appreciate your creative bent and will use these to supplement my unit."

Love this activity set? I hope you'll leave a review of your own. Then you can picture me doing a happy dance AND you'll get credit towards your future purchases!
