Product Description
1984 is a complex, intense piece of literature, genuinely challenging to high school students.
I’ve created this final test to fairly assess students’ comprehension of the novel through questions requiring recall and evaluate their understanding of the novel’s concepts with questions entailing application and synthesis.


The content and format of the test is as follows:

----10 Matching: GROUPS to descriptions: eg. Brotherhood---the opposition to the Party

----15 Matching: CHARACTERS to descriptive quotes: eg. Katharine---“She had not a thought in her head that was not a slogan….The human soundtrack….”

----5 Short Answer: slogans, principles of Ingsoc, ministries, propaganda, Two-Minutes Hate (and brief description)

----3 Short Essays: family as an extension of the Thought Police, Mutability of the Past and Doublethink, Party’s theories about intimacy

-----10 Provide definitions: eg. physical jerks, duckspeak

-----15 Multiple Choice: Goldstein’s Book---eg. natural defenses of the superstates, membership in the Party

-----4 Short Answer: torture effectiveness, Party contrasted to other totalitarian regimes, Room 101, the conclusion
