This item is a comprehensive unit covering: characters, terms/concepts, plot, themes, and application to modern day. The entire unit covers approximately 15 hours of class time.
The study guides may be used as quizzes, homework, or discussion starters. The final exam is a concise synopsis of the story, in paragraph form, broken down by the three parts. Throughout the text are numbered blanks. The students choose the correct word to fill the blank from a word bank. There are 100 blanks overall, but the word banks are specific to the individual parts. The answer key is provided. The project requires students to apply instructions from Goldstein's Book to the field of advertising.
I designed this 1984 assessment package in an attempt to instill in them forever the term, "Big Brother" (w/all its ramifications). Due to the density of language in the novel and the complexity of content, I arranged their study to begin with "what they were used to" and arrived at a challenging project which, not only drove the theme of the novel home but was fun for the students as well. Student Instructions for Project Paper are included.
An additional activity involves euphemisms (doublespeak) and questions about Orwell's life from the Famous Authors series (DVD).
