This fully editable bundle includes four quizzes, for a total of 62 questions! In addition to a quiz for each of the three books (sections) in 1984, I have also included a "practice" quiz which I use before giving the quiz for Book One. Each quiz is comprised of 14-17 multiple choice or short answer questions, and is based on a reading passage from the novel. An answer key for all quizzes is included.
I created these quizzes for a junior composition course. In our school, students in this course read George Orwell's novel 1984. Of course, they also take their college entrance exams in their junior year, so I am always tasked with some kind of test prep, too. If you're like me, you hate devoting class time to just test prep, but a few years ago when our school switched from the ACT to the new SAT, I thought my students really did need some practice before taking the exam. The reading section in the new SAT is based on close reading of a passage. Compared to the ACT students had been used to, the SAT reading section seemed significantly more challenging, both in the content of the passages and in the types of questions students would need to answer. In particular, the SAT includes questions that ask students to choose the best support for previous answers--not something my students are very strong in or used to in a testing situation!
So, I set out to make reading quizzes that would both achieve my goals of assessing whether or not students were keeping up on the reading and whether they were understanding the novel, and also provide some practice for the SAT. Although students have access to a passage for each quiz, the first several questions ask them to provide the context for the action in the passage--what happened before or after, where they scene is set, who particular characters are, etc. These allow me to see who's keeping up on the reading. The rest of the quiz asks SAT--style literal and inferential comprehension questions that students need to reference the passage to answer. These allow me to see how well students are able to read critically to comprehend the novel.
These quizzes are quite rigorous, so I always want to make sure my students understand what they will be like beforehand. For this purpose, I created a practice quiz which my classes do with me a day or two before the first reading quiz. It gives them some exposure and I can also model test-taking strategies, which they can apply in class and when they take the SAT or ACT.
Please note that, due to copyright laws, the actual reading passages are not included in this bundle. However, in the teacher's note I have provided the information about where each passage is in the novel so that they can be easily located.
