1984 Activities to accompany reading and discussing
Section 1, Chapter 6.
In this chapter we learn a lot about relationships in Oceania.
How does the Party control or at least manipulate the all-powerful sex instinct?
Yes, this is that really awkward chapter with the prostitute.
I hope this helps. :)
This product is three pages with 29 tasks.
Students can complete this activity after or during reading Section 1 Chapter 6 of Orwell's 1984.
The product is also an effective discussion guide or activity for small groups.
The questions are organized sequentially to follow the text.
When Winston writes in his diary, students are asked to fill in key words from quotes and excerpts from the text.
These words eventually stand out to them as foreshadowing the surprise at the end of the chapter where Winston discovers the unattractiveness of his $2 prostitute.
Other questions address the Party's view on intimacy among citizens of Oceania, and how they go about preventing such relationships.
Students are introduced to Katharine, Winston's wife and determine the causes of their breakup.
Students are instructed to note that Katharine and the dark-haired girl are foils and to watch that contrast develop throughout the novel.
Finally, students should conclude that the Party fears natural instincts because they are too difficult to control.
Eventually they will come to recognize that this is the reason Winston and Julia and the reader perceive their illicit affair as an effective rebellion.
I use a clear font and relevant graphics, and I allow space for student responses.
