Activity to accompany reading and discussion of 1984, Section 1, Chapters 4 and 5.
Winston completes important work at the Ministry of Truth; in this chapter we see what that work is.
We meet Syme in Chapter 5; he provides us with a discussion of Newpeak, an important method of limiting thought and communication among Oceania's citizens.
This activity is five pages with 48 tasks (questions and graphic organizers) for students to complete during or after reading Orwell's 1984, Section 1, Chapters 4 and 5.
---Winston's work at the Ministry of Truth,
---the mutability of the past,
---his creation of Comrade Ogilvy,
---the power of the Party to control the citizens' information.
---Students are introduced to Syme who explains Newspeak.
There is a chart requiring students to create Newspeak words.
Also, there are questions regarding the dark-haired-girl and speculation about why she's watching Winston.
Questions vary in degree of difficulty: comprehension, analysis, synthesis.
There are some tasks that require students to fill in key words in quotes or excerpts from the text.
This is thorough coverage of the chapters and could also be used as an assessment or as a discussion guide.
I use clear font and relevant graphics, and I provide space for student responses.
