This activity takes me two class periods. The first day we create our index card pictures. Sometimes I have the students use water colors with this activity. The index cards look really nice when we have time to do them with the water colors. I also like that the students are able to use paints in Spanish class to make the activity a little more artistic and creative.
Before the class arrives the teacher cuts the sentences on the 3rd page of the document into strips for distribution to the students. The sentences review activities and places using Me gusta ______________ en __________________. If you have small classes, each student could do 2 strips. There are 30 unique sentences in all.
The second day we review our sentences, then look at the index cards and write the sentences. This can be turned into a competitive assignment in a number of ways (best illustration, class with the highest total of correct guesses, student with the highest number of correct guesses, 1st, 2nd, 3rd place, vote on your favorite illustration for the following sentence (provide the sentence)...then show the index cards from all class periods and students submit a secret ballot for their favorite, etc.)
The activity asks the students to:
1. Illustrate your sentence on a 3x5 index card. (Do not use words)
2. Turn in your card to the teacher when you are finished. (teacher numbers them before displaying them)
3. Read the sentences that you receive (the complete first page of the print out) and think about what a picture might look like for each of the sentences. You may draw additional pictures that represent the sentences you did not receive at the beginning of the activity. These additional drawings should be completed on a blank sheet of paper that is folded and divided into equal parts. (2, 4, 6, 8, etc.) *If you want to assign this step to the students as extra credit, it may be helpful to keep some of the fast finishing students on task.
4. Once all index cards are received, you will look at the cards and decide which of the sentences was illustrated and write that sentence in the appropriate space on your answer sheet. So if picture #1 is of a roll of film and a bucket of popcorn, you would write next to #1 on your answer sheet: Me gusta ver peliculas en el cine.
The students do a lot of creating in this lesson, which I have discovered to be a huge motivator. Also, the students know that everyone will see their work, so they put in the extra effort.
Lastly, this is a word document, so if you need to modify some of the vocabulary, it is easy to do.
