Product Description
Students learn to use several strategies for adding a 2-digit number and a 1-digit number AND a 2-digit number and a multiple of ten in the context of word problems. Full-color strategy posters (8½x11) are included for two of the ten word problems. These posters are intended to visually illustrate strategies students can use to add. Word problem topics, such as giraffes on a savannah, monkeys in a tree, clowns at the circus, and watches in a watch shop will help engage your students. Both color and black line clip art used on each word problem further add appeal. Students express the solution to each word problem using words, numbers/equations, and/or drawings. There are ten large format word problems each with a black line reproducible for students. AS OF 2-22-2015, A DOZEN NEW PROBLEM SOLVING WORKSHEETS HAVE BEEN ADDED. Reproducible ten frames, open number lines, and a 1 – 120 number grid are included. There is also a “5-Point Checklist” in large and small formats.

This resource addresses Common Core State Standard 1.NBT.4: Add within 100, including adding a two-digit number and a one-digit number, and adding a two-digit number and a multiple of 10 using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used. Understand that in adding two-digit numbers, one adds tens and tens, ones and ones; and sometimes it is necessary to compose a ten.
