New to my store as of 12-16-13, this FREE Common Core aligned resource was developed to provide students with hands-on practice using base ten blocks to model and find 10 less and 10 more than given 2-digit numbers.
This resource supports Common Core standard 1.NBT.5: Given a two-digit number, find 10 more or 10 less than the number, without having to count; explain the reasoning used.
Included are ten hands-on task sheets in black line format, along with a place value work mat (tens and ones).
The first five tasks engage students in the following:
Modeling given 2-digit numbers using a specific number of base ten blocks;
Following written directions to add another 10 and repeat until they reach a stated number;
Recording their work and explaining their understanding using numbers, pictures (drawings), and words; and
Sharing their reasoning with a partner or small table grouping
Tasks 6–9 engage students in practice drawing “quick” tens and ones to show 10 less or 10 more than the picture model. They use their drawings to help them complete five statements.
The final task, Task 10, is open-ended, allowing you or your students to pick their own 2-digit number to explore.
