PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This resource begins with the concept of standard 1.NBT.6 embedded in a word problem titled, “Tasty Donuts”. A set of 5 full-color posters, depicted in the downloadable preview and thumbnail images, illustrate several ways in which students can learn to subtract multiples of ten and justify their reasoning. These posters make great visual references (anchor charts) that can be useful during your whole group lesson, guided math groups, and intervention settings. Clip art of a boy “thinking” about how he will solve the word problem appears on each poster with strategy prompts presented in thought clouds. Addition word problem strips in a printable black line format are also included for practicing the standard in context. The theme of those word problems is “Ducks in a Pond”. Several printable pages are included to provide students with practice applying their understanding of the standard in a written format. Students assemble a mini practice booklet suitable for early finishers, independent practice, quick-checks for understanding, intervention, or homework. A game board, spinner, reproducible recording sheet, and student game directions are included. Each full-color anchor chart measures 8.5 x 11 and depicts a strategy students can use, a drawing they can make, or a model they can construct to help them solve the “Tasty Donuts” word problem. The same strategies, models, or drawings can be used to solve problems involving subtraction of multiples of 10 from multiples of ten in the range 10-90.

CC STANDARD 1.NBT.6: Use place value understanding and properties of operations to add and subtract. Subtract multiples of 10 in the range 10-90 from multiples of 10 in the range 10-90 (positive or zero differences), using concrete models or drawing s and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used.
