This Common Core aligned resource was developed to help students understand the meaning of the equal sign, and determine if equations involving addition and subtraction are true or false. Students learn that the equal sign does not mean the answer comes next, but that the symbol indicates that the left side of the equation has the same value as the right side.
Each section in this resource begins with a “visual organizer”, or snapshot, of the materials contained within. Download the sixteen page preview for a closer look inside this resource.
Features of this resource include math vocabulary cards in two size formats, a number balance exploration with a sorting equations activity, a math-literature lesson plan using the book The Hershey’s Kisses Addition Book by Jerry Pallotta, and a second lesson plan, “Snowball Equations”, in which students sort true and false equations. Students engage in activities to help them rewrite false equations to make them true.
This resource ends with an “Additional Practice” section. In this section, you will find black line “Practice equations” sets 1-3, each consisting of six equations. Finally, six “Quick-check equations” sets 1-6, with four equations each. The “Quick-check equations” can be used as a warm-up activity or as an exit card at the conclusion of a lesson.
