PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This product includes three different lesson plans for 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade students on kindness. All three lessons include the ASCA Student Standards that apply to the lesson, a detailed outline of lesson procedures, possible discussion questions for students, all required materials, and the title of a book that can be used to supplement the lesson. While the primary focus of all three lessons is on caring, each lesson focuses on a different aspect of kindness. This is perfect for school counselors who like to reuse lessons each year!

The first grade lesson focuses on caring and ways to show kindness at school and at home. In this lesson, students take part in an activity on giving and receiving compliments. Personally, I did this lesson after conducting a social skills group with first grade students. In this counseling group we discussed good manners, e.g. saying thank you when someone gives you a compliment. Therefore, this lesson is a great way to reinforce positive social skills. All of the materials needed are included in this package.

The second grade lesson plan focuses on teaching students empathy. This lesson plan includes a small group activity in which students decide if certain statements would hurt another person's feelings and a worksheet students complete individually. The worksheet challenges students to consider how they would feel in different situations. An example from the worksheet is, "This is Lilly. A student in her new school asked her to play at recess." The students are then asked to draw how they would feel if they were Lilly. The worksheet includes a variety of different scenarios that would elicit different emotions (embarrassment, sadness, exclusion, etc.).

The third grade lesson focuses on showing compassion as a way a person can show kindness. This lesson includes a worksheet for students to complete. The worksheet asks students how they can show compassion in different situations. An example from the worksheet is, "Jessica gets pushed down by another student at recess." The students are then asked to write or draw a picture of how they could show Jessica compassion. Also included in this lesson plan is a word search. The words that can be found in the word search are all different ways a student can show compassion. This will allow the school counselor to open a discussion on the different words and how they relate to kindness. Examples of words listed in the word search include, understanding, considerate, kindness, empathy, and sympathy.
