Description

This 38-slide PowerPoint walks students through some tough, controversial Supreme Court decisions - and includes cases that are of particular interest to young people. Cases in this file focus on religion and speech issues: Cantwell v. Connecticut (1940) (door-to-door evangelizing), Rosenberger v. Rector and Visitors of the University of Virginia (1995) (denying student activity funding to a religious publication but not to other publications), Engel v. Vitale (1962) (student-led prayers in school), Santa Fe Independent School District v. Doe (2000) (student-led & student-initiated prayers at high school football games) Bethel School District #43 v. Fraser (1987) (student's right to use obscene language in a school speech), National Socialist Party of America v. Village of Skokie (1977) (right of neo-Nazis to march in a predominantly Jewish community without having to pay a prohibitive insurance fee), and Hazelwood v. Kuhlmeier (1983) (school vs. student control over school newspaper contents). This is a great springboard into the complicated nature of 1st amendment rights.
