These twelve fun elf worksheets are aligned with the first grade CCSS 1.OA.A.1. All the different word problem situations are covered and there are unknowns in all positions. The questions are written at a first grade level using an elf theme. The students show their work using ten frames, drawing and using an equation. Because the answers are not always the sum, students also write the answer separately showing that they understand the question. This packet comes with an answer key that also tells what type of situation each word problem is.
These worksheets can be used when teaching strategies for answering story problems. When the kids show their answers multiple ways, they make connections to the different strategies.
They can also be used in small groups as an intervention for kids who need extra practice. You can use them for assessment, review and homework. Some teachers use them as their word problem of the week!
Common Core Standard 1.OA.A.1
Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together, taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the unknown number to represent the problem.
