Although Common Core does require students to measure the length of objects, it does not have a standard for weighing and comparing objects.
Our district has added an additional 1st grade power standard that includes “estimating and measuring the length, weight, and volume using non-standard units of measure.” Our district is also requiring teachers to add reasoning and problem solving to all areas of our teaching.
I created this math center to give my students practice in reasoning and problem solving. This center also gives students another opportunity to explore the differences and similarities between objects using their weight.
I chose items that most of us have around the classroom. I hope these work for you. In my math center, I have a simple balance, the worksheet, and a basket of the items
By the way, my 1st graders loved doing this so much, that I made a second page for them — which I’ve included for you too!
