Are you struggling with teaching writing to your first grade students? Then our units, each based on a specific Trait of Writing and aligned to the Common Core, are a perfect starting place. Each of these units uses a mentor text as a basis and then expands into a specific form (mode) of writing.
In this unit we use the simple mentor text "David Goes to School" by David Shannon to teach the CONVENTIONS Trait. In first grade conventions are actually found in the Language Standards, not in the Writing Standards. L.1.2.b focuses on using end punctuation.
The four lessons in this unit focus on this standard and also bring in the narrative writing standard. Each activity is comprehensive and includes specific directions to the teacher, helpful hints, and ready-to-use reproducibles.
However, what makes our units different is that all activities are research-based. Not only do we design activities that work, we tell you what the research tells us about these types of activities.
If you like this unit, you may also want to check out our other K/1 conventions units based on the mentor texts "Yo!Yes?" and "Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus". These take the end punctuation standards just one step further. A special bundled package with all three units is also available and includes our copyrighted CCSS writing charts.
Please note: the mentor texts are not included in these lessons. Teachers can easily find these books in most school libraries. We also have a link to each book on our Amazon Associates website at www.denovolearning.org. Your purchase of books from our site does not cost you anything extra and allows us to purchase more books house for unit development. Thanks!
