Need an engaging activity to practice sight words that doesn’t involve worksheets? In this teacher-led game, students listen for the sight word and race classmates to slap the right word!
In Sight Word Slam, students are put in groups of 3-4 (can be modified for smaller groups too). Each group has a set of sight words that are cut apart. The teacher will read a direction from the teacher script. Ex: "Slap the word over." The first student to slap the correct word gets to keep the card. Then you move on to the next direction. The student with the most cards at the end is the winner!
Want to enhance your activity with technology? I've included PowerPoints for you to flash the words for students to read and then spell them to go over the answers! Students can clap, snap, stomp, etc. each letter to spell the word before going on to the next word. Using the PowerPoints is OPTIONAL and not necessary to be able to play the games. :)
The kids will LOVE this game because they are practicing sight words WITHOUT having to do a paper/pencil worksheet. I have included four sets of sight words, so you can play multiple times while practicing various 1st grade Dolch sight words. You can also modify the activity to play with small groups.
