This Guided Reading unit of instruction is designed for a 2nd grade reading intervention group (on the STEP assessment, STEP level 5, for Fountas and Pinnell, level E readers). When I designed this unit, these students fell significantly below our quarterly benchmark (level K). Their independent reading level is STEP 4 (level E).
The data informing this plan of instruction is the STEP assessment. On this assessment, one scholar did not achieve (DNA) on the accuracy, rate, fluency, and comprehension. The other scholar did not achieve (DNA) on the accuracy and rate component of the assessment. When this scholar reads level F and G texts, fluency becomes a significant challenge as her accuracy slows her rate and fluency is then lost (primarily through phrasing).
This unit plan is differentiated for level E to F readers and includes strong accuracy, fluency, comprehension, and word work teaching points. It is aligned to the Common Core standards.
