This is a collection of math journal prompts for first grade that coordinate to the Math Investigations program. The prompts address newly introduced skills from the unit as well as review skills that have been previously taught. These journal prompts would be a great resource if your district uses Math Investigations but they would also be perfect for math centers, review work, homework or as an extension activity regardless of the program or resource you use in your district.
These prompts are designed to have students work through a problem solving process, show their work and explain their thinking with visual representations and/or in writing. These prompts provide students with an opportunity to learn and review math skills and content from the common core learning standards in second grade and to get beyond just a surface level of repeating back information. The prompts allow students to apply and transfer their learning through an authentic experience.
Skills and content addressed include:
* telling time
* solving story problems
* comparing numbers
* place value
* problem solving
