"To gain knowledge, we must learn to ask the right questions." (Anatol Rapoport)
Classroom discussions and communication in mathematics are an important component in all math instruction. There are “teachable moments” when this occurs naturally. However sometimes it can be a challenge getting kids to talk about their thinking. My Question Ring has 23 different questions for teachers to use that encourage good classroom discussions about math. By integrating these into your math instruction you can increase the rigor of the questions you ask your students. There are also 4 blank cards so you can add questions of your own.
*use just one or two questions and have students delve deeply into them through written reflections (math journals or ISNs) or discussions (whole class or small group).
*use many questions in a single lesson to encourage discussion of multi-step word problems (especially those with high cognitive demand).
* incorporate them into your lessons on mental math.
I also included a page with all the questions that you could keep with your lesson plans or in the TE of your primary math resource.
Incorporating open-ended questions into your math instruction, daily, provides students opportunities to master the Common Core Standards for Mathematical Practice.
