    1st Grade NGSS Bundle Implementation Guide
    Bundle Description
    This is it!!! Your entire 1st grade year of science. By teaching these 3 units, 2 Engineering Design Challenges and 3 Science Infomational Reading activities, you will be covering all of the 1st grade content standards of the Next Generation Science Standards, as well as the engineering standards for grades k-2. Each unit is packed full of inquiry based activities, integrated language arts, word wall cards, games, task cards, projects, and assessments. Here's a brief description of each unit. You can also click on the individual products on this page to see each of the included products in more detail.

    Here's what's included:

    Life Scienc Unit:

    Structures, Functions, and Informational Processing:

    Activity 1: Humans Copy Animals and Plants: For this activity students work in cooperative groups to match human inventions with the plant or animal that inspired the design.

    Activity 2: What Can You Make?: Students are tasked with inventing something that uses ideas from a plant or animal structure.

    Activity 3: Animals and Their Offspring: Resources (video links and literature suggestions) are provided for students to learn about how animals care for their young.

    Activty 4: Student Note Pages: To coincide with the videos and books, students keep track of their learning through writing or pictures, depending on the level of your students.

    Activty 5: Whose Baby Is It?: Students use picture cards to match parent animals with their babies. Some are more challenging than others.

    Activty 6: Comparing Animals and Offspring: Students compare parents and offspring of different animals and describe similarities and differences.

    Activity 7: Animal Poster Reports: As a culmination to the unit students create animal posters in cooperative groups. A grading rubric with a focus on presentation skills is included.

    Activty 8: Word Wall Cards and Games: Word wall cards for the unit with suggested activities are included

    Post Test: A post test is included.

    Earth Science Unit:

    Space Systems: Patterns and Cycles

    Activty 1: What’s In the Sky?: To introduce the unit, students make observations of things they see in the sky during the day and at night.

    Activity 2: Shine On!: Students collect data on the location of the sun at different times of the day. The also use a simple sun dial to see the change in the shadows. They then analyze their data and write down their findings.

    Activty 3: Making Patterns: Much of this unit involves patterns. This fun activity allows students to create patterns and then trade with a classmate to continue their pattern.

    Activity 4: Hello Moon!: The patterns continue with a focus on the moon. A Moon Log is provided for students to fill in, or for you to fill in together in class using a web site with current data.

    Activity 5: Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star: Students learn about constellations through a video and/or book and then create their own.

    Activty 6: Four Seasons: Students learn about the differences in the four seasons through a literature book followed by an activity focusing on clothing, weather, activities plants.

    Activity 7: The Sun’s Heat: Students practice reading thermometers and then go out side to collect data on the sun’s heat in direct sunlight compared to shade.

    Activity 8: Sunrise and Sunset: Students analyze data of sunrise/sunset at different times of year and realize that the hours of daylight are much more in the summer compared to the winter. They also continue the patterns for June and December.

    Activity 9: Word Wall Cards and Activities: 2 sets of Word Wall Cards are included; one with picture clues and definitions, the others with just the words. Several suggested activities are included.

    Post Test: A “Show What You Know” post test is included.

    Teacher pages are included with each activity. Suggested literature and video links are included with many of the activities for background and content.

    Physical Science Unit:

    Waves: Light and Sound

    Activity 1: Can You Sleep Little Bear? This adorable literature book introduces students to the idea that we need light to see. Students do an investigation using their own cave. A writing activity is also included.

    Activity 2: Sources of Light Students go on a little scavenger hunt and record different sources of light.

    Activity 3: Light ‘em up: Students play a game to reinforce the idea that things can only be seen when illuminated.

    Activity 4: Traveling Light: Student test different items to see which ones light can pass through.

    Activity 5: The Sounds All Around: Another great literature book introduces the idea that sound is caused by vibrations.

    Activty 6: Sound Scavenger Hunt Students make a list of different sounds they hear.

    Activity 7: What Makes Sound? Given a variety of materials, students work in group to create sounds

    Activity 8: Exploring Sound with a Kazoo: Students make simple kazoos using wax paper, paper tubes and rubber bands.

    Activity 9: Paper Cup Telephones: Students investigate how a paper cup telephone works.

    Activity 10: Crack the Code: Students use sound or light to communicate math problems to a group far away.

    Word Wall Cards and Activities: Word Wall cards and suggested activities to build vocabulary are included.

    Post Test

    Teacher pages are provided for each of the activites. Literature suggestions and video links are included ot help build background and content knowledge.

    Finally, to address the K-2 Engineering standards, there are also 2 engineering challenges designed to address the standards for this grade level. The first is an engaging activity where students design a solution to stop ice cubes from melting too quickly is included. Check that out here:

    Earth Science: The Earth Needs the Sun

    Physical Science: The Science of Echoes

    Expository reading is one of the most challenging types of reading for young readers. 2 different levels of the informational reading are included with this product. The first is a picture booklet with short sentences. The second version is for stronger readers and includes more sentences and more challenging vocabulary. These high interest readings engage students while giving them exposure to informational reading.

    Included in these informational reading products a pre-reading sheet, including vocabulary words and a chance to discuss the topic before reading.

    With first graders, you can do this as a center, or as a whole class. After the article, there is a question page that can be used as an assessment
