Use these worksheets to focus on and assess reading comprehension and writing skills as well as spelling and phonics. Each page in the packet aligns to one of the 1st grade SRA Open Court Reading program's Core Decodables (copyright 2015). Students answer 3 comprehension questions for each decodable book as well as locate and list words from the story that includes the targeted spelling pattern. On review lessons, students are asked to retell or summarize the story instead of listing the spelling pattern words. These worksheets are perfect for whole class, small group, independent work, or even homework.
In my classroom, we usually read the question first to set a purpose for reading. Then as we read, students highlight the text evidence in their decodable books that helps to answer the questions. Finally, they respond in writing using complete sentence - rephrasing the question and inserting the text evidence to answer each question. Afterward, they use a red pen to circle the spelling pattern words in the decodable book and then copy those words in the lower section of the page.
After a few weeks of modeling, my students are able to do these independently.
