Help your students become meteorologists in your classroom! Students complete 10 math challenges that are real-world related while they pretend to be a weatherman. This math activity is perfect for 1st graders. It aligns with 1.OA.6.
Print out all 10 challenge posters and the 10 aligned challenges. Distribute them around your room. Give each child a recording sheet. Explain to students that they will become weathermen and weather women and will need to complete all ten challenges! They have to find all the challenges you've left around the classroom and find the answers to each one. They use the recording sheet to mark off each challenge as they go.
If you're looking for ways to make more meaningful connections to 1st grade math in the real world, this is the activity for you! Students will embark upon a day as a meteorologist while practicing this difficult math concept at the same time.
Step 1: Tell your class that they are weathermen today and will practice subtraction within 20. Students solve math challenges set up around the room. They can be completed in any order and you can choose how many challenges students complete or what time frame they have to meet YOUR needs.
Set-up is quick and easy. Simply print the 10 posters, the math worksheets, and a recording sheet for each student. Place them around your room and you’re ready to begin! Additional door décor, editable name tags, editable admission tickets, and themed banner are included if you want to use them!
Step 2: Let students move around the room and solve each challenge! Each time students solve a math challenge, they go to the teacher to get it checked. Students can work independently, in partners, or in groups. Your choice!
Step 3: When students finish all ten challenges (or however many you assign), they win! You can give them the certificate of completion included.
Step 4: Most of the time, there are early or fast finishers! These kiddos get to go around the room and scan the QR codes provided! Each QR code leads to a fun fact about the weather they can record on the sheet provided or a piece of notebook paper. This keeps everyone happy and on task!

Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 - 4 = 13 - 3 - 1 = 10 - 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 - 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13).
With remote learning taking center stage in our communities, a digital version is now included! It's compatible with Google Slides™ and can be completed 100% digitally. That means no making copies and less prep for you!
First, invite your students into a video call on whatever learning platform your school district uses. Set the scene and tell your class online what themed day they will be completing.
