These three crosswords offer a fun way to approach the spellings of homophones. The clues in the first two puzzles are definitions of 30 of the most common homophones and are set up in a very unique way.
After each clue is the clue number of that homophone’s "partner." For example, clue 24 Across and clue 1 Down are homophones.
Clue 24 Across reads like this:
24. Not interested or excited (adj.) 1D
Clue 1 Down reads like this:
1. Long, flat piece of wood (n.) 24A
The answer to 24 Across is BORED; the answer to 1D is BOARD—homophones! As with all crosswords, students uncover letter clues to other answers as they work. The puzzles also contain a thorough explanation of what homophones are and very detailed directions. (See preview.)
The third puzzle is comprehensive. It contains all 60 homophones but no numbered cross-references, so students are on their own!
