This 2.5 day lesson plan covers an introduction the elements to an experiment: independent and dependent variables, controls, normal group, and qualitative and quantitative data. Also included is a lab that reinforces this information, along with other aspects to an experiment.
The files are PowerPoint 2007 and PDFs in a zip file. The PowerPoint slides are compatible with Windows 7/Power Point 2007 or later. Please read the unit overview first (PDF file included). The PowerPoint slides and worksheets are broken down by subject/day to help with flexibility in teaching. Packet is appropriate for 5th grade, 6th grade, 7th grade, 8th grade, and homeschool students.
Day 1 – Introduction to Elements of an Experiment (approx. 20 minutes)
13 PowerPoint slides
1 page lab sheet
1 page corresponding worksheet
Day 2 – Experiment Variables
20 PowerPoint slides (includes game information)
2 page corresponding worksheet with answer key
Day 3 – Penny Lab
13 PowerPoint slides (includes lab procedures)
2 page lab worksheet
Each PowerPoint slide set starts with a bell question to activate learning and ends with an exit question to quickly assess students. The slides correspond directly to the worksheets, and the information that needs to be written down is underlined on the slides. Slides are designed so that all the information does not appear at once and continues by clicking through the program at the appropriate pace. The labs have corresponding procedure slides.
While this curriculum is designed to be turn-key with minimal changes, please keep in mind that all schools are different regarding standards focus, class-period time, etc. If you have questions, concerns, or catch a typo (hopefully not!), please feel free to contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org. Also, please take a moment to review this curriculum after use. We hope you find this useful in your classroom! Thank you!
