This unit comes with 2 pages of repeated practice in multiplying 2 digit by 2 digit numbers. The grid is set up to multiply numbers up to 20 x 30. Then they should write the partial products on the grid. Finally they will add the partial products to find the product. We tend to use this method with the on level and above level students in our 3rd grade intervention groups near the end of the year. This would be a great intervention in 4th and 5th grade for those who do not understand the concepts behind multi digit multiplication.
2 pages of worksheets- equations are blank so your can make as many as needed
8 slides on smart board lesson- Pages can be cloned if more are needed.
Link to video explaining partial products method.
Sample page to show how to draw and label the rectangles. Pull out directions on the target page to explain how to draw rectangles, the color coding and how to set transparency of the shading.
We model shading the equation on the smart board lesson with different colors. We have students use crayons on their papers. After the 1st day we have students come up to the smart board to model the making of the rectangles, shading and writing the equations on the grids. Then setting up the partial products equations in the margin. The color coding helps them understand what is being multiplied.
