The Amazing Math Race Series: 2-Digit by 2-Digit Multiplication
This lesson is set up for students to review multiplying 2-digit by 2-digit numbers using 3 methods: area model, partial products, and standard algorithm. Students may complete the activity on their own or in a small group. Students will “visit” four cities during the race: Pisa, Naples, Venice, and Rome. In each city students will complete a series of math problems and a physical task. Once they complete the math problems and task students will check-in with the teacher to check for accuracy. If they are correct, they may move onto the next city. After all four cities are complete, students complete The Amazing Math Race by taking two (very careful) laps around the class room. This activity is set up to review the concepts, but to also get the kids moving. I hope your students enjoy it just as much as mine do (and I apologize for the singing in this one)
Included in the download is both color and B&W printing options and an answer key.
This lesson is best for 4th grade, but can be used as an extension activity for 3rd grade and a review for 5th grade.
