This writing activity was extremely useful in having my students start writing and evaluating 2-point short responses. There is a question for them to answer about oxygen, and then 6 sample short responses that they can grade for various criteria (claim and two pieces of evidence). They can compare their answer to one of the sample answers they have graded to support their own self-assessment abilities.
This could be used in isolation as practice grading multiple responses (written at different levels) to the same question, or conjunction with many texts providing information on how oxygen helps our bodies. We used it with the "Amazing Oxygen!" article and crossword puzzle from Comprehension Crosswords Grade 5 (by Edupress). With scaffolding, younger grades were also successful with this sample grading activity.
