My students love our printable books! Class books are a great way to improve fluency and confidence in young students.
I have included one repetitive, controlled text for early beginner readers and a second book that is a bit higher in text.
Plan to keep each book at school for a week.
Introduce the book by reading it to the class. (I like to prepare my own copy by coloring it nicely.)
Give each child a copy of the book and read-repeat together (you read a line, class repeats you).
Let students have some time to color the pictures. They love this.
Students keep the book in their book boxes all week.
Each day, model a different way to read the book. Paired reading, taking turns, reading in unison, reading silently, read to self, etc.
Fluency is built by repetitive reading. It’s OK if your students memorize the entire text. This leads to feelings of confidence, which leads to the desire to read more!
On Friday, send the book home to be read to a parent. You can use the parent signature sheet if you would like students to return the book and receive the cute certificates.
Happy Teaching and Thank you!
