Allow your students to analyze, and problem solve their way to understanding 2 step equations.
Students work to put the strips in order to solve the 2 step equation. Much like a puzzle they have to figure out how the 12 strips solve an equation in order. 6 strips are the computation and 6 strips are the communication. The communication uses vocabulary to describe what is happening in each step of the solution process. They have to think about what is being shown in the strips and work backwards to find the original equation.
It sounds like it would be easy, but it has never been easy for my students, even when I taught gifted!
This creates a class set of materials that can be used year after year!
