This strategy of teaching 2 number addition by finding paths that equal a certain number is a hard concept. This document walks students through the process, teaching them to think about all of the options. I have heard this referred to as paths or mazes)
This starts off by telling you which path to take. Next, students find as many different paths as they can. The last page allows students to find the path that equals a certain number.
I used this in my first grade classroom, but our second grade math teacher was excited to use this to introduce this skill in her room as well.
These can be used a skillsheets, but I printed them on colorful paper and laminated. My students used dry erase markers to solve and create number sentences.
(Use addition and subtraction within 20 to solve word problems involving situations of adding to, taking from, putting together,
taking apart, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions, e.g., by using objects, drawings, and equations with a symbol for the
unknown number to represent the problem)
